We confirmed each correction against a primary or institutional source, such as state historical societies, the National Archives, the FBI's history pages, court records and respected historians, before it went on the site.
The Old West and the gangster era are full of tall tales, so we try to keep three things separate: what the records show, what most historians believe, and what is only legend. That's why each story has a verdict (True, Partly true, Still debated, Unproven or Debunked) and why some questions are left open on purpose.
